SOUTH REPUBLIC, MI. - Thomas Charles Marquardt, 64, of South Republic, died on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Hospital in Iron Mountain MI after a courageous battle with cancer.
Thomas was born on Sept. 15, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Robert and Mary (Joyce) Marquardt.
He grew up in Superior, WI before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1967. He retired from the Air Force in 1987 with an Honorable Discharge and became an airline pilot for Southwest Airlines from 1987-2002.
Thomas moved to Republic in 2003 to enjoy his retirement doing the things he loved best. Thomas was an avid hunter and fisherman; and loved the outdoors.
Thomas is survived by three children, Terry Marquardt of Boise ID, Travis Marquardt,of Dallas TX and Holly Thompson of Dallas TX, one brother, Richard (Joni) Marquardt of Oconto WI, two sisters Edie (Tom) Haugen of Mesa AZ and Roberta Edstrom of Madison WI; 3 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers William and John Marquardt.
A memorial service will be held on Wed. at 4:30 pm central time at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain, MI. Burial will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI.
A special thank you is extended to the entire staff at the VA Hospital for helping make Thomas' last days more comfortable. Also thank you to Jim Hofbauer, Thomas' good friend who helped both Thomas and the family during this most difficult time.
