Mercedes E. (Nelson) Szenina

DEWEY, AZ. - Mercedes "Merc" E. (Nelson) Szenina, age 91, of 11065 West Cherry Creek Rd., Dewey, AZ 86327, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Prescott Valley, AZ where she had been a resident since July.

Merc was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Ishpeming to Lawrence and Libbie (Jandron) Nelson. She graduated from Ishpeming High School in the class of 1939. In 1941 she was crowned Miss Ishpeming Winter Queen. In her early years she worked in California and at the 5th Army Headquarters in Chicago. In 1956 she returned to Ishpeming and worked at K.I. Sawyer A.F.B. where she met Frank and they were married for 55 years.

They lived in various places during Frank's Air Force career including France, Texas, and Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Frank and Merc lived in Gwinn after Frank's retirement from the Air Force. She and her husband spent winters in Arizona and permanently moved there in 1999. Although she lived in many places, Merc's heart was always in Ishpeming and Gwinn.

Merc was a member of various Catholic churches during her lifetime. She loved to spend time sitting with Frank on their deck in Arizona looking at the mountains. Merc loved jewelry and in her later years enjoyed making jewelry as a hobby. She also enjoyed when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit.

Merc is survived by her husband, Frank; two children, Donald (Carolyn) Szenina of Ishpeming, Tom (Lisa) Szenina of Cherry, Ariz.; 6 grandchildren Kim (Rob) Soyring, Julie (Dell) Kab, Sara (Paul) Hasstedt, Lauren, Tyler, and Austin Szenina; 3 great-grandchildren Logan and Alayna Soyring and Ayla Hasstedt, along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Merc was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; Irving, Norman (Binky) Nelson and grandson Aaron.

A private Christian service was held in Prescott Valley, AZ.
