MARQUETTE- At the end of August, Capt. Kurt M.K. Hoenke of the United States Army returned from a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan, where he commanded a team within the Explosive Hazards Coordination Cell in support of the ISAF Joint Command, U.S. Forces.
Hoenke is in the 20th Combat (Airborne, Engineers) Brigade based at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he previously served as a Horizontal Construction Platoon Leader, Airborne 137th Sapper Company, Executive Officer, and as 308th Battalion Operations Officer, during which service he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal twice.
During his service in Afghanistan Hoenke was decorated with the Bronze Star by the Army.

Hoenke is a 2005 graduate of MSHS and a 2009 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in chemical engineering. He resides in Sanford, N.C., with his wife Katherine (McCole) Hoenke and son Finley.
His parents are Dr. and Mrs. Frederick Hoenke of Marquette.
