MARQUETTE - They couldn't nail down the No. 1 position, but a trio of Marquette County teams are well entrenched in the first Upper Peninsula Big Five high school football poll of the season.
Voted on by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, Menominee (3-0) grabbed the No. 1 spot with three first-place votes and 23 total points.
Ishpeming (3-0), on the strength of 10 quarters of shutout football to open the season, earned the other two first-place votes and garnered 20 points.
Kingsford (3-0) is third, followed by Marquette (3-0) in fourth with 12 points and Negaunee (3-0) fifth with six points.
The Little Five vote was similarly close for the top spot, with Forest Park (3-0) getting three first-place votes and 23 points to North Dickinson (3-0) earning two first-place votes and 22 points. The rest of that poll includes North Central, Gogebic and St. Ignace, the only team with a loss among those in the poll at 2-1.
The Eight Man vote has Rapid River on top with four first-place votes and 24 votes and Cedarville second with the other first-place vote and 21 points.
