NMU cross country: 'Cats cross country takes sixth at Midwest Opener

SOMERS, Wis. - Northern Michigan University kicked off its fall season with a sixth-place finish in a 16-team field at the Midwest Collegiate Opener hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Wildcats, who scored 76 points, were paced by juniors Olivia Howard in 26th place, clocking 19 minutes, 14.0 seconds, and Chelsea Farquhar in 27th in 19:14.2.

Another NMU junior, Larissa Halonen, was 31st in 19:18.3, while redshirt freshman Xavier Donajkowski was 32nd in 19:19.5 and junior Christina Toogood was 36th in 19:23.2.

"The team ran well against a very strong field today," NMU coach Jenny Ryan said. "Our top five runners ran within nine seconds of each other."

Other Northern runners breaking into the top 100 were Junior Emily Allen in 70th, senior Evelyne Ruiz in 76th and sophomore Jaylee Brown in 99th.

Edinboro won the meet with 33 points, followed by UW-Parkside, Northwestern, Indianapolis, Winona State and then the Wildcats.

NMU's next meet is Saturday at the Pre-GLIAC Meet at Michigan Tech.
