September 12, 2013

NEGAUNEE - The Negaunee City Council is scheduled public hearings this evening on the city's proposed 2013 property tax rate and renewable energy plan.

The council meets at 7 p.m. at the Negaunee Seniors Center.

Included in the property tax proposal is an increase of 0.4874 mills, or 2.95 percent. The city's 2013 tax rate plan includes 18.4124 mills for general operations, 0.8994 mills for parks and recreation and 1.4984 mills for equipment.

The city is required by law to hold a public hearing before the council can approve the tax levy.

Public comment is also being sought on Negaunee's renewable energy plan. WPPI Energy - a not-for-profit regional power company serving Negaunee and 50 other customer-owned electric utilities - estimates Negaunee will have zero costs to comply with renewable energy standards beyond the wholesale rates the city pays to the company.
