Prep girls tennis: Marquette gets through Mother Nature to score 7-1 win over Munising

MARQUETTE - Neither Mother Nature nor the Munising High School tennis team could keep the Marquette Redettes from posting a home victory Wednesday.

Overcoming a 1-hour, 15-minute rain delay and winning two flights in three sets, Marquette recorded a 7-1 triumph over a young Munising team.

"Singles played well," Marquette head coach Derek Sandstrom said of his team, which had been rained out in two of its previous three scheduled matches. "And although I gave my No. 1 doubles team the day off, our doubles played well.

"Ramina Mikhael and Jordan Berglund at No. 4 played (and subsequently won) their first varsity match."

A steady, hard rain for several minutes forced Sandstrom and Munising coach Rod Gendron to call their players off the courts at 4:58 p.m.

After the two coaches - and some helpers - used squeegees to remove water on the courts, play was resumed at 6:13 p.m.

Wednesday's match was Munising's first in two weeks due to scheduling and a rainout Monday.

"After not playing for two weeks, we needed to finish a match and get back into rhythm," Gendron said. "It was well worth it to us to wait it out."

Marquette's Madalyne Connon won her match at No. 1 singles before the rain hit. She beat Sadie Cornish, 6-0, 6-3.

"My serves were good and I played consistent tennis," Connon said. "(Cornish) played well at the net, so I had to decide whether to lob or angle my shots down."

The Redette, who played at No. 2 doubles last year, said competing at No. 1 singles this season has been tough on her.

"The transition ... has been a big challenge for me," Connon said.

Said Sandstrom: "She had some unguarded swings and served well. It's good to see her get a win. I'm hoping to see more of that kind of play from her."

At No. 1 doubles, Adele Gendron - the Munising coach's daughter - and Alex Paquette gave the Mustangs their only win on the day with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 triumph over Amanda Gray and Mackenzie Verbeke.

"We played a good match," Paquette said. "We didn't give up. We did well with our long strikes."

Added netter Gendron: "(Marquette's) serves were a lot better than ours. They got a lot of points off of their first serve.

"We just adjusted our returns and didn't give them close swings."

Coach Gendron said he liked his duo's "composure" after losing the second set.

"They kept battling," he said. "Marquette played some excellent defense that last set. It could have been anyone's match, but (my girls) focused at the end and got a good win."

In the other three-set match, Marquette's Mallory Grugin and Madison Rieboldt turned back Ariana Martineau and Gabi Koenig, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 11-9 at No. 2 doubles.

"They were down and after that lengthy rain delay, had to refocus," Sandstrom said of his tandem. "Both are sophomores and I'm proud of them."
