Prep cross country: Huebner, Rambo lead Marquette runners in Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN - Freshman Amber Huebner led Marquette to seven of the top nine places as the Redettes easily won the girls team title at the Kingsford Invitational high school cross country meet held at City Park in Iron Mountain on Tuesday.

MSHS scored 22 points as runner-up Escanaba had 76. Negaunee was fifth with 146 and Westwood eighth with 254.

In the boys race, Marquette sophomore Lance Rambo won a relatively close race as the Redmen finished second in team scoring to the Eskymos, 40-71. Negaunee was fourth with 120 points while Westwood tied for ninth with 274 and North Star Academy was 12th with 345.

Huebner clocked 20:37 to beat girls runner-up Leigha Woelffer of Gladstone by 35 seconds. MSHS junior Calla Martysz was third, just four seconds behind Woelffer, with teammates Nichole Mackey in fifth, Hannah Detmers sixth, Cassidy Thomas seventh, Shayla Huebner eighth and Abby Potts ninth. All of those runners finished within a minute and a half of the winner.

Rambo clocked 17:49 in the boys race to beat out runner-up Nate Carey of Kingsford by 14 seconds. Sophomore teammate Logan Zueger was eighth, less than a minute and a half behind Rambo, while Negaunee's Grant Johnson came in 10th. Marquette senior Cole Rieboldt, who has won several individual titles this fall, did not race as he played in the Redmen's home soccer game on Tuesday.
