NMU soccer: Wildcats drop regular season opener at Minnesota Duluth 2-1

DULUTH, Minn. - The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team fell 2-1 on Thursday at Minnesota Duluth in a regular season-opening match under the lights at Malosky Stadium.

The Wildcats fell behind in the ninth minute via an unassisted goal by UMD's Maureen Stormont. Dani Potter added another unassisted goal to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 in the 68th minute.

NMU sophomore Ashley Katers cut the UMD lead in half in the 78th minute with an assist from freshman Carmen Villarruel. It was the first collegiate goal for Katers and first collegiate point for Villarruel.

NMU freshman goalkeeper Caroline Glantz of Malmo, Sweden got the start over sophomore Shelby Conard and freshman Alexandra Simmons. Glantz was credited with two saves in her debut.

The Wildcats play their home opener at noon Saturday against Minnesota Crookston.
