MARQUETTE - The former principal and administrator of the Munising Baptist Church and School was sentenced Wednesday to between 5 and 15 years in prison on criminal sexual conduct charges involving a student.

Benjamin David Franklin II, 35, pleaded guilty in Alger County Circuit Court in July to one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with an individual between the ages of 16 and 18.

After being arrested and charged in March, Franklin was released on bond.

That bond was revoked in June after police and prosecutors alleged Franklin sent numerous electronic messages to the victim, violating a provision of the bond.

In an April interview with The Mining Journal, Jason LaFlamme, pastor of the K-12 school, said it came to his attention late on March 11 that Franklin was "involved in an inappropriate relationship with one of our high school students."

He said the school immediately removed Franklin from all contact with students and demanded his resignation, which was tendered and accepted by the school's board March 12.

Franklin oversaw the day-to-day operations of the school and "taught a couple of classes," according to LaFlamme.

He had been employed by the school since 2004.
