Prep soccer: Marquette shut out 3 times Saturday in Petoskey

PETOSKEY - Marquette Senior High School was unable to dent the twine even once in three games played downstate at the Petoskey Tournament on Saturday.

The Redmen lost to Rochester Stoney Creek 1-0, to host Petoskey 3-0 and to Fraser 5-0.

But their play wasn't as bad as the scores indicate, according to MSHS head coach Matt Tebo.

"This may very well be the best competition we see all season," he said about the three Lower Peninsula opponents. "We created a number of (offensive) chances and had some good opportunities to score, but at times we're our own worst enemy."

He said Marquette (2-4) tends to play cautiously early in games against unfamiliar opponents, putting pressure on its passing game when the ball is often bottled up in its own zone.

Complicating matters were injuries to several of his starting defenders.

"I think we were just running out of gas by the second half of the last game," he said about Saturday.

That's when Fraser scored four times to break open a 1-0 halftime game.

Senior goalie Tony Lackey made four saves in the final game while his teammates had four shots of their own, three of them on goal.

The Redmen got off to a tough start, since the only score of the 1-0 loss to Stoney Creek was an own goal knocked in when a Marquette defender's pass ricocheted off another Redmen defender about 22 minutes into the game.

In that game, Lackey made nine saves while MSHS had three shots, but just one on goal.

Petoskey scored goals two minutes apart midway through the first half of its 3-0 win as Lackey made seven saves. Marquette had 10 shots, four on goal, along with two shots off the crossbar and one off the post during the second half.

The Redmen's next game is at 6 p.m. Thursday at home against Iron Mountain, followed by a 5 p.m. Friday game in Sault Ste. Marie and a return trip downstate for three games in a tournament at Harbor Springs on Saturday.
