Against Kingsford, Marquette was able to only post a win by Swajanen at No. 4 singles.

"Kingsford is tough from top to bottom," Sandstrom said. "They're talented and experienced.

"Our girls played just their fourth match of the season today and saw some of the toughest competition they'll see all year."

Ishpeming 6, Ironwood 2

Playing its sixth match in eight days, Ishpeming turned back visiting Ironwood on Wednesday, 6-2.

"The team played pretty strong all the way through," IHS head coach Erl Langness said.

Despite losing at both No. 1 singles and doubles, the Hematites still had plenty of match wins - all in straight sets - to move to 2-4 on the season.

Jaime Olson, Jessica Penhale and Lindsey Thompson prevailed for IHS at No. 2-4 singles.

"Jaime did well," Langness said. "The girl she played (Danielle Begalle) was at No. 1 doubles last year."

In doubles play, Krista Almli and Kaylee Ronn at No. 2, Katie Harrison and Chloe Stetson at No. 3, and Ella and Kinsie Bertucci at No. 4, all posted wins for the Hematites.

Negaunee 8, Gladstone 0

Taking all its matches in straight sets, host Negaunee blanked Gladstone on Wednesday, 8-0.

"We did a lot of nice things as a team today," NHS head coach Kyle Saari said after his squad had improved to 4-0 on the season. "We finished more points at the net and were more consistent playing back."

Allyson Carlson led the way, beating the Braves' Gabby Movalson at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Abbi Kill, Angie Ring and Dana DeBretto also posted singles triumphs for the Miners.

"Dana continues to be a real solid No. 4 for us," Saari said.

In doubles, Amanda Washnock and Jessa Johnson beat Gladstone's Paige Schwartz and Melissa Casey at No. 1, 6-2, 7-5.

Also winning in doubles play for Negaunee were Kylee Taavola and Hanna Kantola, Elly Kantola and Lauren Anderson, and Anja Turecky and April Walimaa.

Munising 6, Gwinn 2

Unable to dent Munising's doubles teams, Gwinn dropped a 6-2 decision to the visiting Mustangs on Wednesday.

The Modeltowners (0-2) won the first two singles matches. Brooke Luokkala downed Sadie Cornish at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4, and GHS teammate Maddie Forrester won at No. 2.

"A big surprise was Forrester," GHS head coach Darcia Mattson said. "She was down 0-5 in the first set and came back to win 7-6 with a 10-8 tiebreaker before taking the second set 6-0.

"Maddie's a fighter who can get to the ball."

The Mustangs came back, however. Izzy Nebel and Haylee Lakenen won at No. 3 and 4 singles, then the Mustangs swept doubles play.

Adele Gendron and Alex Paquette, Bailey Downs and Via Ouellette-Ballas, Ariana Martineau and Gabi Koenig, and Taylor Kahlstorf and Morgan Flynn all prevailed in doubles for Munising.

"We're going in the right direction," Mattson said. "Everyone is showing improvement."
