NEGAUNEE - Negaunee didn't let an off-game derail its plan to win its season opener, pulling out a 3-1 victory over Westwood in a high school volleyball match held at Lakeview Memorial Gym in Negaunee on Tuesday afternoon.

The Miners won a close 25-23 decision in the first game only to fall behind 16-0 in the next game, losing 25-7. But NHS rebounded for a 25-10, 25-22 finish to move to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mid-Peninsula Conference.

"The humidity played a big part," Negaunee coach Annette Gleason said. "It really sapped everybody's energy. But our girls rebounded well after we fell in that hole in the second game."

The Patriots built that big Game 2 lead mainly off the serving of junior Cristine Larson, who finished the match with 10 service aces, more than twice of any other player on either team.

But led by senior Rosalie Anderson's 12 kills, the Miners bounced back.

Both teams are off until next week. Negaunee hosts Escanaba at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday while Westwood doesn't play until Thursday, Sept. 5, with a home match against Norway at 7:30 p.m.

Westwood won the JV match, 25-21, 25-14.
