Prep girls tennis roundup: Ishpeming goes on the road, shuts out Gwinn 8-0

GWINN - With only one match going to three sets, the Ishpeming High School girls tennis team blanked host Gwinn on Monday, 8-0.

The lone match to go an extra set was at No.1 singles, where Ishpeming's Gabby Croley rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brooke Luokkala.

Jaime Olson, Jessica Penhale and Lindsey Thompson added victories for the Hematites at Nos. 2-4 singles, respectively.

At No. 1 doubles, Libby Doney and Hailly Thompson turned back the Modeltowners' Anja Wiedenhoefer and Nastya Nikulina, 6-4, 6-3.

Katie Harrison and Kaylee Ronn, Alexsis Christian and Sarah Lyke, and Ella Bertucci and Kinsie Bertucci all prevailed for Ishpeming at No. 2 through 4 doubles, respectively.

Unable to get untracked in Kingsford Monday, the Marquette Senior High School girls tennis team dropped an 8-0 decision to the Flivvers.

All eight matches went just two sets.

At No. 1 singles, Kingsford's Hannah Tresedder defeated Madalyne Connon, 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 1 doubles, Anna Shanks and Kate Lamy downed the Redettes' Brienna Buhl- and Taylor Rovin, 6-0, 6-2.

Escanaba 7 Munising 1

ESCANABA - Frankie Mattson picked up the lone win for the Mustangs at No. 3 singles, defeating Kayla VanPortfliet, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 4 doubles, Munising's Sydney McInnis and Taylor Kahlstorf challenged Escanaba's Hannah Beversluis and Rebecca Clark, but fell 7-5, 6-4. McInnis and Kahlstorf were both junior varsity call ups.

"The team is gaining valuable experience playing these early season matches," Munising coach Rod Gendron said. "We lost our top seven players from last season's team, so we have numerous players making a giant leap up in our line-up."
