CHASSELL - Police continued Saturday to investigate a Friday afternoon accident involving an all-terrain vehicle colliding with a minivan on U.S. 41 in Chassell Township that sent six people to Portage Hospital.

The Houghton County Sheriff's Office reports the crash occurred at about 3 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Lower Massie Road. The names of those involved in the accident were not released and no updated information on the conditions of the injured was available from police Friday night.

Deputies said a 13-year-old girl from Chassell Township was driving a Polaris RZR side-by-side ATV and attempted to cross U.S. 41 from Lake Shore Drive to Lower Massie Road.

Police said the girl pulled out into the path of a southbound minivan driven by 67-year-old Barbara Wells of Chassell. Police said there were a total of five passengers on the ATV, ranging in age from 3 to 13. Four of the five were ejected from the vehicle.

Those five passengers and Wells were taken to the hospital. Two additional passengers in the minivan were not hurt in the crash.

Police said the ATV and the minivan sustained major damage and were towed from the scene.

Deputies were assisted by Chassell Township First Responders, Mercy Ambulance and Dave's Towing.
