Competitors greeted by perfect weather, mud at Suicide Hill

NEGAUNEE - Organizers called the weather was perfect for the third annual Suicide Hill Mud Plunge Saturday.

More than 550 people participated in the two-day event. On Friday, the 1-kilometer kids run and the 5K twilight run were held. This was the first year for the Twilight Run, which took place at 10 p.m.

"We had quite a few people come out for the Twilight Run," said Kori Tossava, the executive director of the Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Chamber of Commerce. "We did have some mixed reviews about it and if we do it next year we'll plan to do it a little earlier."

Tossava said the weather on both Friday and Saturday was perfect and she couldn't ask for a better day. On Saturday, the competitive run, Suicide Hill climb and fun run were held. Participants of the competitive and fun run had to tackle obstacles such as crawling through the mud and a halfpipe that they had to climb up.

"The people (doing the competitive run) are usually pretty hardcore about the race," Tossava said. "But everyone's been coming across happy with smiles on their face and mud on their face."

This is Tossava's first year running the Mud Plunge as the executive director of the GINCC, but she has ran the race before.

"I ran it the last two years and that's definitely more fun, but it's definitely great to see everybody come down, have fun and everybody come across (the finish line)," she said.

Each race allowed individual runners and teams to compete. Teams were required to cross the finish line together with arms locked.
