MARQUETTE - As students file into their classrooms on the first day of class this year at Father Marquette Elementary School, they may not notice the changes the building has undergone over the summer.

But with a new roof and new windows, Principal Jackie Wright said the kids will have a much better environment to learn in.

Wright said the windows being replaced were original to the building, built in 1958, and the roof hadn't been replaced for decades, with the school experiencing problems with leaks in some areas.

The school contracted with Premeau Construction as the general contractor on the roughly $375,000 project and used architectural firm Integrated Designs Inc. for the design.

Wright said the upgrades will help prevent the weather from distracting students.

"With these double-pane windows, it will keep the heat out in the few days that we have in the summer, in September and May, and it'll keep the rooms nice and warm in the winter," Wright said.

She said it will also help save on energy costs as both upgrades help increase efficiency, cutting down on the amount of hot air leaking outside through the old windows.

"We won't have to worry about that, because with the single-pane windows, the boilers were going way too much, so the efficiency (now) will be incredible," Wright said.

The upgrades were paid for through a diocesan capital campaign orchestrated by former Bishop Alexander Sample, who has since left to be an Archbishop in Portland, Ore.
