Prep girls tennis: Westwood, Negaunee score convincing dual victories Friday

ISHPEMING - Sweeping the doubles matches, the Westwood High School girls tennis team dumped visiting Ishpeming on Friday, 6-2.

Katie Rankinen and Gabby Hebert led the way at No. 1 doubles, where they beat Libbie Doney and Kaylee Ronn, 6-1, 6-0.

Shana Caliguri and Rachel Anderson at No. 2, Lacey Pietro and Olivia Derocha at No. 3, and Bridget Wood and Emily Carlson at No. 4 all added doubles wins for the Patriots.

At No. 1 singles, Ishpeming's Gabby Croley stopped Caitlin Hewitt, 6-1, 6-4.

Jaime Olson of Ishpeming took the No. 2 singles match, while Westwood's Courtney Beauchamp and Faith LeRoy prevailed at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

"Our singles lineup played great and is beginning to make the adjustments needed to be competitive," Westwood head coach Chris Jackson said.

Winning all matches but one in straight sets, the Negaunee High School girls tennis team blanked visiting West Iron County on Friday, 8-0.

Allison Carlson at No. 1 singles paced the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Haley Anderson.

Abbi Kill at No. 2, Angie Ring at No. 3 and Dana DeBretto at No. 4 also posted singles wins for NHS (2-0).

All four of our singles had nice days," Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said. "They're all pretty smart and have a good understanding of how to work a point."

At No. 1 doubles, Amanda Washnock and Jessa Johnson knocked off the Wykons' Sydnie Mazurek and Meg Miatech, 6-4, 6-3.

Kylee Taavola and Hanna Kantola (in three sets) at No. 2, Elly Kantola and Lauren Anderson at No. 3, and April Walimaa and Anja Turecky at No. 4 also posted wins in doubles.

"Elly, Lauren, April and Anja all picked up their first varsity wins," Saari noted.
