ISHPEMING - The preliminary examination of John Wayne Mathews on criminal sexual conduct charges was adjourned Tuesday pending the possibility of additional charges being made against him involving other alleged victims.
Mathews, 44, of Ishpeming was arraigned last week on charges of accosting a child for immoral purposes and fourth degree criminal sexual conduct. His preliminary exam was in 96th District Court in Ishpeming.
"We want to make sure we have everything before we go into the prelim," Marquette County assistant prosecutor Glenn Sarka said.
The alleged victim in the case is a 13-year-old girl who the defendant knew, according to Ishpeming City Police Department Chief Dan Willey, who declined to release any additional information about the ongoing investigation.
During Tuesday's court appearance, Judge Roger Kangas rejected Mathews' request that his bond be reduced from the $200,000 it is set at.
"We're probably going to have another hearing on bond later to revisit that issue, but we haven't received anything from the defendant at this time," Sarka said.
The preliminary exam will probably be resumed next week, he said, but the date has not been set.
