ISHPEMING - Truancy and teacher experience credits will be among the agenda items discussed at the Ishpeming school board meeting tonight. The board will look to curb truancy by amending the student handbook to hold both students and their parents more accountable, said Ishpeming Interim Superintendent Dan Paul.
"We've had difficulty with not a large amount of students, but a small portion who had trouble with truancy," Paul said. "So we're looking to shore that up as far as the language in the student handbook so that students and parents can be held more accountable for attendance or not-attendance, I should say."
Paul said the board will also look to implement awarding teacher experience credit to teachers who, while new to the district, have experience in public education.
These teachers' salary rates would be reflective of this public school experience, gaining one credit in the Ishpeming school district for every two years that they have taught in public schools, with a cap set at four credits.
The school board will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in the Ishpeming Middle/High School library.
