To the Journal editor:
One has to be naive to believe that the mechanisms open to whistleblowers works, since it exists mostly within government and within the organization that is the one blowing the whistle, going up the chain of command stays within and is subject to cover-ups, denial, persecution, being hounded, retaliation, fired or otherwise disciplined, being ignored and labeled a trouble maker.
Whistle-blowers provide transparency and accountability sadly lacking within government, corporations and major political parties.
America should honor the truth and Edward Snowden. As citizens we cannot do our duty if we don't know the truth. Secrecy only aids corruption, which is why the political parties are so fond of it.
Government is an institution of people who make policy. We continue to lose our Constitutional rights through actions of the courts, congress and leadership.
No one understands what treason is and for that read Article III, Section 3, which says, in part, "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort ..." which means to show specific intent to make war.
It is naive to accept the word of General Keith Alexander alone, as to the veracity of his statement to the numbers and accuracy of the effectiveness of the NSA wide surveillance program and necessity of it.
Go after the criminals not the whistleblowers who bring us the truth at the cost of government persecution and prosecution, all the while government continues its wrong doing under the guise of national security and national interests.
What has been harmed is not the national security of the US but the ability of its political leaders to work against their own citizens and citizens around world in the dark. If anything is a crime, it's that secret, unaccountable and deceitful behavior, not that shining of light on it.
Our leaders are at home with the corruptness, the crassness of and paranoia and spying on all who do not follow along like sheep. It is about hounding to conform, without criticism of policy, pretending all is well, unwilling to make a better world, a good world, a pollution free world, a world free of wars and in peace.
