MANISTIQUE - The FutureMark Papers mill in Manistique sustained minor damages from a small fire in a vent, which began early this morning.
According to Manistique Public Safety, volunteer firefighters were dispatched at 3:59 a.m. today on report of a fire in the paper machine on the second floor of the FutureMark Papers building.
Upon arriving on the scene, officers determined the fire was confined within a vent above the machine.
Firefighters accessed the roof and extinguished the fire, which had been initially fought and contained by paper mill personnel. Damage to the paper machine was minimal, though a roof vent and fan on the roof did receive substantial damage. Officers remained on the scene for several hours, venting heat from the building and extinguishing hot spots. They returned to the station at 6:30 a.m.
The Hiawatha Volunteer Fire Department and paper mill employees assisted at the scene.
