West Washington road project to start Monday

August 9, 2013
KYLE WHITNEY - Journal Staff Writer (kwhitney@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - City traffic will face detours next week, as sections of the west end of West Washington Street will be closed to through traffic while road work is completed. The project, set to begin at 7 a.m. Monday, will include water main and service work, as well as mill and overlay work of the street between Garfield Street and the west end of West Washington, at the intersection with U.S. 41.

Mill and overlay is a surface treatment that couples the milling of a small amount of asphalt with the overlay of a layer of new material.

"We're going to be milling and overlaying that street but before we do that, we have to take care of some issues we've had with the street," City Engineer Keith Whittington said.

He said the existing water main on the south side of the street - it services McDonald's and a handful of other businesses - is outdated and has broken in the past. The project will abandon the old main and tie those businesses into a newer main nearby.

The mill and overlay work, Whittington said, is meant to bring the road back to a high standard.

"A mill and overlay will extend the service life of it for another 10-15 years," he said.

Whittington said that for accounting purposes, the West Washington Street project is grouped with a mill and overlay project planned for Division Street this year. The cost of those two projects, he said, is $705,000.

Street closures and traffic disruptions will begin Monday. Between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday, Washington will be closed to through traffic from Garfield Avenue to Rublein Street.

Between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday, West Washington Street will be closed to westbound traffic between McClellan and Meeske avenues.

Work will continue into the following week. Between 7 a.m. Aug. 19 and 7 a.m. Aug. 20, West Washington Street will be closed to through traffic from McClellan Avenue to Rublein Street.

Detours will be provided during each phase and businesses will remain open.
