NEGAUNEE, Mich. - Dayton J. "Tod" Kellan, 95, of Maas St., Negaunee, died at 11:35 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2013 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since August 2012.
Tod was born June 17, 1918 in Negaunee to H. Dayton and Florence I. (Thomas) Kellan and was a lifelong area resident. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Education from Northern Michigan University in 1940. He married Shirley L. (Manuel) on May 5, 1943. Tod served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Captain in the European Theater of Operations. Following his service to his country, he worked as the chief operator of the water and wastewater treatment plants for the City of Negaunee, retiring in 1978 with over 30 years of employment with the city.
Mr. Kellan was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church, Negaunee and the Mitchell Methodist Men. He was also a member of the Negaunee Masonic Lodge for 60 years, the Shrine Patrol, the Negaunee Elks and numerous military service organizations. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, an inspiring grandfather, and a proud and loving great-grandfather.
Surviving are his daughter, Linda (LeRoy) Warner of Negaunee; 2 grandchildren: Lyle T. (Kimberly) Warner and Lisa A. Barabe; 4 great-grandchildren: Joseph Anthony Warner, Andrew Dayton Warner, Seth Joseph Barabe and Nash LeRoy Barabe; a sister-in-law, Ruth Kellan of Negaunee; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley L. (Manuel) Kellan on July 7, 2009; 2 sisters: Shirley Cleven and Joanne Anderson; and a brother, Norman "Bud" Kellan.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2 at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. Douglas E. Mater officiating. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at a reception in the church hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mitchell United Methodist Church in Tod's memory.
