NMU golf: Murphy takes sixth at Wisconsin State Amateur Championship

MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University golfer Mike Murphy finished sixth at the 112th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship Thursday.

He finished 6-over par at the four-day tournament held at The Bog in Saukville, Wis. The annual championship features 180 of the state's top amateur golfers.

Murphy is a native of Madison, Wis. His home course is Maple Bluff Country Club.

"Congrats to Mike on an outstanding tournament last week," NMU golf coach Dean Ellis said in a news release. "Finishing in the top six in the state of Wisconsin is an outstanding accomplishment."

Murphy opened the tourney with a two-under 70 after recording six birdies. The next day, he carded a 78.

In round three, Murphy birdied four of five holes on the front nine and finished the day with a 1-over 73.

The final day, Murphy birdied three of the last four holes to post another 73.
