July 25, 2013
The Mining Journal

ESCANABA - Negaunee will play a game a day for three days in pool play at the Little League Minors softball state tournament being held in Escanaba.

Negaunee's 9- and 10-year-old girls open the state finals against Cheboygan at 1 p.m. Friday in the city's Lemerand Park, located near the Delta County Airport along Lake Michigan. Other pool games are against Centreville at noon Saturday and vs. host Escanaba at noon Sunday.

The event's 16 teams are split into four pools, with the top pair of teams from each four-team pool advancing to quarterfinal elimination games on Monday. Semifinals are Tuesday and the state championship game at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Kingsford, which plays in another pool, is the only other Upper Peninsula team at the tournament.

Negaunee won four straight elimination games to capture the District 11 championship in Marquette last week.
