MARQUETTE - A 10-year-old Marquette boy was taken to Marquette General Hospital Monday after he rode his bicycle out in front of a car and was struck.

The Marquette City Police Department said the crash was reported at about 6:52 p.m. and occurred and Ridge and Fifth streets in Marquette.

Kelly Gilligan, 29, of Marquette was eastbound on Ridge Street when a boy on a bicycle rode out from a driveway in front of her vehicle. Police said she was unable to avoid a collision.

Police said Ian Parkkonen told them he had been riding east on the sidewalk and decided to turn around. He didn't see the car and rode out in front of it. Police said the bicyclist was at fault, failing to yield to Gilligan's vehicle.

Parkkonen suffered injuries characterized as non-incapacitating and was taken to the emergency room at the hospital.

No update on his condition was available today from Marquette General staff.
