Hiawatha fest marks 35 years of music, friends, family

July 19, 2013
The Mining Journal

An exciting weekend of music begins tonight as the Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival launches its 35th edition.

This year's festival of Hiawatha is set to run through Sunday at Tourist Park in Marquette and we salute the organizers from the Hiawatha Music Cooperative for all the hard work they put in year after year making this amazing event happen.

To mark the anniversary, the history of Hiawatha will be celebrated with special photo displays and a campsite-decorating contest, with participants asked to deck things out reflecting their favorite year or general era from the last 35 years.

The festival kicks off with a Get Acquainted Dance at 7 tonight, with sets by Craver, Hicks, Watson & Newberry; the Royal Garden Trio; and Bonsoir Catin.

A full schedule of music and activities starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and will continue through 10 p.m. Sunday. Workshops each day will include a mix of local and main stage performers. Also on the docket will be a children's area with music and crafts, special activities for teens on Saturday night and a variety of food vendors.

Another festival tradition is the Artists in the Round art and craft show and sale, coordinated by the Oasis Gallery in Marquette. Added this year is a youth artists corner where young people ages 7-17 can sell their handiwork.

This year, the beach area is back, meaning there is yet another way for families to have fun together.

Hiawatha brings music lovers from across the Upper Peninsula, throughout the Midwest and even far-flung parts of the globe together to enjoy some amazing talent.

Again, we thank organizers for all that they do and we wish festival-goers another enjoyable weekend of entertainment and fellowship.
