Superiorland Soccer Association hosting inaugural U10, U12, U14 rec tourney

MARQUETTE - Superiorland Soccer Association year-end playoffs for three age divisions will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette.

Play in the double-elimination Eric Mason Memorial Tournament for the U10, U12 and U14 recreation age divisions will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.

SSA president Jim Mackey said championship matches will be at noon Sunday for girls U-10 and U-12, and 1 pm. for U-10, U-12 and U-14 co-ed teams. Shootouts in the title matches will be held if there's a tie at the end of regulation.

"We've never tried this before," he said of the tourney. "Parents of the kids said they wanted to see who was the best of the best while still keeping it at a rec level.

"It's a neat way to end the (10-game) regular season."

Mackey added 30 teams will compete in the event.

"The kids and coaches are pretty excited about it," he said. "Outside of the (annual) Superior Dome tournament, it'll be the most soccer Marquette sees in one day.

"We're all looking forward to it."
