John W. Wakkuri

ISHPEMING, Mich. - John W. Wakkuri, age 74, of 235 Marquette St., Ishpeming passed away on Sunday July 14, 2013 at his camp of an apparent heart attack.

John was born December 7, 1938 in Ishpeming the son of Walter and Martha Wakkuri.

He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1956. He served in the United States Air Force. John married the late Beverly Ann Erkkila on Nov. 3, 1963. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for many years at the Tilden and Empire Mines.

John was an active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed time spent at his Casey Lake Camp, and his daily Sauna at camp. He was passionate about his flower gardens, and always spoke highly of his Finnish heritage.

He was a true Michigan Team fan, rooting for the Red Wings, Lions and Tigers. John also enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include 4 sisters Maryann Wakkuri of Ishpeming, Vicki (Rudolph) Perttunen of Novi, Lea (David) Lang of Louisburg, KS, and Elaine (Wayne) Prusi of Champion; a brother Paul (Joyce) Wakkuri of Roy, UT, a brother-in-law Steven Hintsala of Champion, 2 sisters-in-law Barbara (Dennis) Johnson of Menominee, and Lorraine Wheeler of National Mine, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly on July 8, 2010 whom he dearly missed, and a sister Joanne Hintsala.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in John's memory.
