Mary Jean DeRoche

CHAMPION, Mich. - Mary Jean DeRoche, 90, known to most as Jean, Green Bay, died Monday, July 15, 2013.

She was born January 2, 1923, in Champion, MI, the oldest of three daughters born to Alphonse and Leona (Bussiere) Cardinal. Jean graduated valedictorian from Champion High School in 1939 and later magnum cum laude from Northern Michigan College of Education at Marquette, MI in 1943; having earned a B.S. degree. She was a member of Phi Kappa Nu Sorority and was named to Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. While Jean was in college, she participated in competitive tennis and swimming. On August 7, 1947, she married Ernest DeRoche at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion, MI.

Jean and her husband, Ernest, moved to Green Bay in August of 1952 to teach school. She taught 15 years in Green Bay; 11 years in the Green Bay Public Elementary Schools and four years at St. Patrick Parochial School. Prior to coming to Green Bay, she taught at Wakefield and Grosse Pointe, MI, and Whitewater and Milton, WI.

Jean was a member of the Lady Elks. She enjoyed bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs through the years. Jean and Ernest were avid dancers and especially liked square, round and ballroom dancing. She was a member of Annunciation Parish for 57 years, having joined the church in 1956. For the past 12 years, Jean has been a resident of Woodside Lutheran Home where she developed many kind and loving friendships with the staff and residents.

Jean is survived by three children, Margaret and her husband, Robert Gilling, Arlington Heights, IL; Louis DeRoche, Green Bay; John and his wife, Mary Kay DeRoche, Whitefish Bay; seven grandchildren, Mary Deneige Gilling-Kaempen and her husband Alexander Kaempen, Palatine, IL; David William DeRoche, Richland, WA; Joseph Richard DeRoche, Milwaukee; Kathryn Marie DeRoche, Madison; Jennifer Lynn DeRoche, Madison; Elizabeth Christine DeRoche, Whitefish Bay; John Francis "Jack" DeRoche Jr., Whitefish Bay; a sister and brother-in-law, Rhea and Louis Jarosinski, Fort Worth, TX; three nieces, Carol Wilm, Jane Summers, and Lori White; and a nephew, Michael Wilm

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, on March 2, 1999; a daughter, Mary Jefcik, on May 7, 1976; her parents; and a sister, Agnes Wilm.

Friends may call at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 211 N. Maple Ave., Green Bay, from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Friends may also call at Annunciation Catholic Church, 401 Gray St, Green Bay, from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Annunciation Catholic Church with the Rev. Ryan Krueger officiating. Burial will be at Fort Howard Memorial Park.
