MARQUETTE, Mich. - Donna Isabelle (Frei) Weesen left us while in the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice on Friday, July 12, a gorgeous U.P. "beach day."

Donna and her kitty lived at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living in Marquette for the past 2 years where she will be dearly missed by staff and residents. Donna's unique personality was a composite of laughter, compassion and inquisitiveness. She was most proud of her career as a mom, grandma and an RN. She was a 1951 graduate of St. Luke's School of Nursing, she said that on the day she completed her first clinical in the hospital was the day she knew she'd found her passion.

As a third generation Marquette native, she was energized by community involvement, an advocate for Lake Superior, homeless animals, literacy and waste reduction. Often she could be found walking the Lake Superior beaches picking up litter, admiring smooth wet rocks and making new friends along the way. Donna served her community in many ways including at Messiah Lutheran Church, the Peter White Public Library Board, the JD Pierce reunion committee, UPAWS volunteer, St. Luke's School of Nursing Alumni Association and the Marquette Regional History Museum (Helen Paul Award winner). Donna was one of the first volunteer Meals on Wheels delivery workers and a Marquette Adult Day Care assistant.
