Most top seeds advance

UPLGA championship flight quarterfinals today at Wawonowin

ISHPEMING - There was only one upset as the top five seeds in the championshp flight advanced at the 87th Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association tournament on Sunday at Wawonowin Country Club.

Players were set into flights after Saturday's opening day of play, with match play opening on Sunday.

Today, quarterfinals matches were scheduled to tee off at 10:10 a.m. and 10:20 a.m.

Matchups include No. 1 seed and defending champion Avery Rochester against No. 8 Pam Frankini, No. 2 Zoe Woodworth vs. No. 7 Cathy Kucherak, No. 3 Carley Saint-Onge vs. No. 11 Karen Plaiser, and No. 4 Doncie Richards vs. No. 5 Nancy Osier.

Plaisier's win over No. 6 Karen McCorkle was the only upset in Sunday's matches. Other wins were posted by Rochester over No. 16 Kris Saint-Onge, Woodworth over No. 15 Anna Mendelin, Carley Saint-Onge over No. 14 Sue Micklow, Richards over No. 13 Lisa LaCasse, Osier over No. 4 Kym Frustaglio, Kucherak over No. 10 Sandra Collins II and Frankini over No. 9 Leah Faketty. Match scores weren't available.

The eight championship flight players who lost Sunday make up the Presidents Flight that plays today. There were four matches in each of the first through eighth flights also on Sunday.
