Helicopter to trim trees

July 12, 2013
The Mining Journal

DE PERE, Wis. - A helicopter and heavy-duty air saw will be used to trim trees along a transmission line corridor in Marquette and Dickinson counties in Michigan beginning Monday.

"The remote nature of the transmission line corridor makes it very difficult to access with ground crews," said Janssen Baij, senior maintenance engineer for American Transmission Co. in Kingsford.

ATC has contracted with a company that specializes in aerial tree management. Helicopters are equipped with heavy-duty air saws suspended on a 90-foot vertical boom.

Tree trimming will occur from north to south from Marquette to Quinnesec along a 345,000-volt line. The work is weather dependent, but should take between eight and nine days to accomplish.
