Charles R. ‘Chuck’ Harwood

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Charles R. "Chuck" Harwood, 74, of Marquette, passed away Sunday morning, July 7, 2013, under the care of Lake Superior Hospice.

Chuck was born on April 27, 1939, in Highland Park, Michigan, to the late William and Edna (Killen) Harwood. He had lived in the Marquette area over the last 40 years, moving there from Sault Ste. Marie. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served with the Sea Bees.

Chuck was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Operating Engineers Local #324, retiring in 1997 after 40 years in that occupation.

During his retirement, Chuck volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was an avid Detroit Lions and Red Wings fan as well as the University of Michigan Wolverines. He enjoyed playing cribbage and spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of St. Peter Cathedral.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Leanne LaPrairie, whom he married in November of 1961 in Sault Ste. Marie; three children, Thom (Susan) Harwood of Green Bay, Wis., Cathy Beltrame of Ishpeming and Bill Harwood of Green Bay; nine grandchildren, Steven Harwood, Amanda Roll, David Warner, Kristine Beltrame, Derek Beltrame, Kymber Beltrame, Roger Beltrame, Zoe Beltrame, and Torie Beltrame; seven great-grandchildren, Morgan, Maddison and Masen Roll, Jordan and Tyler Hart, Ayden Warner and Delaney Bemis; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death besides his parents was a brother, Donald Harwood, and a sister, Jolene Hertel.

Friends may call at the Bishop's Room of St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday in the cathedral with the Rev. Monsignor Michael Steber officiating. Burial will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens, Sault Ste. Marie, followed by a luncheon at Studebaker's Restaurant. Chuck's grandchildren will act as his escorts.

Memorials are preferred to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 2119 Presque Isle Ave., Marquette, MI 49855 in Mr. Harwood's memory.
