Carl A. Laukka

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Carl A. Laukka, 76, of County Road 480, Negaunee Township, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, July 7, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for 1 1/2 years.

Carl was born March 23, 1937 in Ishpeming to Axel and Elsie (Mattson) Laukka, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1955, and was a lifelong area resident. Following graduation, he attended Marquette University for two years. Carl was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his country in Korea. Upon returning home from serving in the Army, Carl married Mary Ann (Virtanen) on September 5, 1959. He was employed as a mechanic supervisor for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, retiring in 1995 with 38 years of service.

Mr. Laukka was an active member at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee, serving on the church council, building committee, was an usher and a greeter. He was an active member of the Negaunee Elks, and was a former exalted ruler. He was also a member of the Negaunee Lions Club and Habitat for Humanity. He and his wife, Mary Ann, were foster parents for numerous handicap children.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Laukka; 3 sons: Kevin (Lorraine) Laukka of West Branch Township, Dr. Mark (Virginia) Laukka of Green Bay and Lorin (Dawn) Laukka of Negaunee; 5 grandchildren: Amanda Giuchin, Colin and Marin Laukka, Lauren (Brandon) Hietikko and Samantha Laukka; 3 great-grandchildren: Mason and Riley Hietikko and Aiden Giuchin; a brother, Alan Laukka of Ishpeming; 2 sisters: Pauline Hill of Kingsford and Margaret Wartman of Milwaukee; his mother-in-law, Bertha Pitkamaki; brother-in- law, Raymond Pitkamaki; 3 sisters-in-law: Barbara (George) Tyner, Arlene (James) Lancour and Carol (David) Fleck; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Eugene Pitkamaki; brothers-in- law: Robert Hill and Lowell Wartman; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Laukka; and a nephew, Robert Hill, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 11 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Solberg officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Hayward, Donald Palomaki, Larry Marta, Jerry Paju, Dave Hallgren and Jeff Jarvi. Carl's grandchildren and brothers-in-law will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday, and also at a reception in the fellowship hall following the service. The Negaunee Elks will conduct lodge rites at the church at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial or Building Fund, or the Negaunee Elks Memorial Fund.
