MARQUETTE, MI. - Gary P. McCarthy, 82, of Marquette, MI, passed away, Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Naples Community Hospital in Florida.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 6 at Lakeview Cemetery, West Central Avenue, Mackinaw City, MI. Pastor David Wallis will be officiating.

Gary was born January 23, 1931 in Standish, MI, grew up in Mackinaw City and attended Mackinaw City High School where he led the basketball team to several state tournament appearances. After serving in the US Navy from May 1949 September 1952, which included the Korean War, Gary left the service with an honorable discharge. He attended the University of North Dakota to study engineering and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Mexico.

After successful engineering and surveying positions, Gary reached the pinnacle of his career as the head of Local Government for the State of Michigan Highway Department. Gary retired from the State of Michigan in March of 1989, and served as a consultant for the U.P. Michigan Road Builders Association before fully retiring a few years later. Gary enjoyed retirement in Paradise, MI on Lake Superior for many years, finally moving to Marquette in 2006. Gary loved the lakes and the outdoors, boating and fishing were his passion. Gary always had a big smile for everyone. A true optimist, he always looked for the good side. Gary was a devoted husband and father who never his missed his son's athletic events and always put family first.

Gary is survived by his wife, Connie, of 59 years, his son, Lee (Lisa) McCarthy of Naples, FL, his sister, Judy (Ken) Feneley of Clare, MI and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Helen, and his brothers Forest and David.
