USOEC wrestler Varona wins gold, earns spot on Junior World Championship Team

MARQUETTE - United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestler Isaiah Varona pocketed a gold and earned a spot on the Junior World Championship Team Sunday at the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla.

Varona, of Miami, faced USOEC teammate Arthur Carmona of Brawley, Calif., in the 55-kilogram championship. Varona took the victory in three periods, winning 3-0 in the first, but getting pinned in the second at 3:06. In the third and decisive round, Varona took the decision 1-0.

Varona had a bye for the qualifying rounds because he came into the competition as the reigning national champion for his weight class.

The Junior World Championships will take place Aug. 13-18 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In other USOEC results, Arthur Carona placed second at 55 kilograms; Alejandro Sancho came in second at 66 kg; Dillon Cowan took second at 74 kg, and Khymba Johnson finished second at 66 kg.
