MARQUETTE, Mich. - On June 6, 2013, Jeannette R. Bernard, age 99, of Marquette, passed away at her residence at 903 Division Street surrounded by her beloved family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at St. Peter Cathedral. There will be a visitation from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. prior to the Mass in the Bishop's Room of the cathedral. A dinner will be provided at the church immediately following the Mass. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. Bernard was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel E. (Ted) Bernard; a son, Thomas L. and a daughter Ellen Bernard (Hansen) Sisk.
As a young girl, Jeannette was a proud member of the 4-H Club which provided her with a wealth of knowledge and memorable travel opportunities. She was one of six girls born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Brassard) Tousignant of Chocolay Township where she was raised on a farm together with her five sisters. This led to her life-long love of gardening, which she enjoyed until her 99th year. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, its choir and Altar Society.
Jeannette was an avid music lover. She played the violin and in fact met her husband playing at the Grange Hall in Chocolay Township. She was much adored and admired by the local music community. She and her husband, Ted, were interviewed by The Smithsonian Institute for their knowledge of local music.
Jeannette was crowned Ms. "Harvest Queen" for Marquette County in 1931. In June of 2012 a concert at Kaufman Auditorium in her honor was performed by her son, Robert Bernard, grandson, Seth Bernard, his wife, May, and Kailin Young. She was presented with a CD of waltzes dedicated to her entitled: "Harvest Queen."
Surviving are 4 children, Stephen D. (Martha) of Bannister, MI, Robert J. of Lake City, MI, Christine M. Evert (Ray) of McLean, VA. and Edward Bernard (Risa) of Marquette; 10 grandchildren, Beth Bernard Colligan (Charlie) of Herndon, VA., Jen Bernard and Wendy Bernard Histand (Miles) of Portland, OR., Jane Hansen and Sarah Hansen (Spence) of New York City, Jason (Lindsey) Bernard of Marquette, Devin Evert (Barbara) of Richmond, VA., Seth Bernard (May) of Traverse City, MI., Ben Bernard of Marquette and Leah Evert of Arlington, VA.
