DNR Plans Prescribed Burn

June 14, 2013
JOHN PEPIN - Journal Staff Writer , The Mining Journal

REXTON - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will be conducting a prescribed burn this afternoon near Rexton in Mackinac County.

The fire, which will cover about 55 acres, is being lit to reduce slash to allow red pine planting.

DNR officials said prescribed burns are planned to achieve specific objectives, often simulating the benefits produced by natural wildfires.

"The burns are conducted by highly-trained DNR personnel in designated state-managed areas during appropriate weather conditions and in cooperation with the proper authorities and local units of government," DNR officials said in a fire advisory.

Among the specific uses, prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat, help with forest regeneration, restore and maintain native plant life, control invasive species and reduce the risk of wildfires.
