MASS CITY, Mich. - Signe Miriam (Heinonen) Kangas, of Mass City, died Monday, June 10, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
Signe was born January 1, 1915, in Victoria, Mich., to the late John and Ida Heinonen. Her earliest memories were playing with her two sisters, Saima (Kangas) and Jenny (Lukkari-Kaspala) in Victoria; her family later moved to Mass City. On June 30, 1934, she married the late Robert E. Kangas. Together they made their home on Mud Creek Road. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and "G.G.", as well as a wonderful aunt to many. Signe was a tremendous homemaker, preparing three hot meals everyday for family and invited guests. Scents of fresh bread, biscuit, or other bakery welcomed family and visitors to their home. She created handmade, heartfelt gifts (sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, and loomed rag rugs) that are true treasures. Her heart was big, her words always kind, and her touch eternally loving and supportive. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include: her only child, Miriam (Lowell) Ricklard of Negaunee and Mass City; grandchildren, Jackie (Garry) Backlund of Norway, Patti Ricklard-Pierson of Negaunee, Rob Ricklard of Mass City, Corky (Sandy) Ricklard of Mass City, Laura (Anderton) Ricklard of Marquette, Jeaneen (Dean) McAuliffe of Marquette; 18 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grand children along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 13, 2013, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon, Mich. A memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock followed by a burial service at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland. Lunch will be served at the Wainola Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Wainola Lutheran Church, Mud Creek Road, Mass City, MI 49948.
