MARQUETTE - The North of the 45th Parallel juried exhibition kicked off it's sixth year at the Devos Art Museum Friday.

The North of the 45th Parallel exhibition is a collection of work from artists living in the geographical area north of the 45th parallel in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The line is the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole. Each year a different juror is asked to select pieces for the exhibition from more than 200 entries. This year's juror is Mason Riddle.

Riddle is a writer based in St. Paul, Minn., and has written extensively on the visual arts, architecture and design. She is the former director of MN Percent for Art in Public Places program and interim director of The Goldstein Museum of Design at the University of Minnesota. Riddle selected 53 artists from 205 submissions for this year exhibition.

"I tried to find the best work of the genre or idea," Riddle said. "For example there were a lot of photographs of Lake Superior, so I tried to pick what I thought were the best ones."

Riddle saw the exhibit in person for the first time Friday and said she believes it's a very strong display.

"I think it's strong because there are a lot of people doing a lot of good work above the 45th parallel," Riddle said. "I hope Marquette residents support the museum and come and see the show."

The show will be at the Devos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University until Aug. 4. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
