MARQUETTE, Mich. - Mary Virginia Loring, age 87, of Marquette, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Born February 17, 1926 in Lansing, a daughter of Thomas and Manila (Millard) Loring, Mary came to Marquette to be near her sister, Martha Fotopulos, in 2006. Mary and Martha's family roots are in the Copper Country. Mary graduated from Michigan State University with a Master's Degree in Art and was one of the first women designers that General Motors hired to work in their Frigidaire Division. In the early 1960s, Mary's dream came true as she was hired by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Architectural Firm in San Francisco where she spent the happiest years of her life. In her later years, she enjoyed teaching in the art department of San Jose State University in San Jose, California.
Mary is survived by her sister, Martha Fotopulos; her nephew, Joe West and his family; her nieces, Susan Shuler and her family, and Mary Ann Jones and her family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Manila Loring; and her brother, Thomas Millard Loring.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
