ESCANABA - Harley Davidson Durocher, 24, of Gwinn, was charged Monday with six felonies in connection with a three-vehicle accident that claimed the lives of Thomas and Barbara Swift of Escanaba in March.

During his arraignment in Delta County District Court, Durocher was charged with two counts of operating a motor vehicle with the presence of a controlled substance causing death; two counts of reckless driving causing death; and two counts of operating with a suspended license causing death.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Durocher remains lodged in the county jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

Durocher was driving a logging truck when he allegedly failed to stop for a red light, causing the semi to strike the Swift vehicle and a second vehicle driven by Joyce Scheriff, 72, of Gladstone, said Gladstone police. The accident occurred around 8:21 p.m.

Thomas Swift was pronounced dead at the scene. Barbara Swift, his passenger, was transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital then transferred to Marquette General Hospital where she later died from her injuries on March 24.

Scheriff was transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital where she was admitted for treatment and later released.

Durocher was not injured in the accident, said police.
