Although plagued by some truly lousy weather, the spring sports season has provided wonderful thrills for spectators and has made some sweet memories for the large contingent of high school athletes participating in baseball, softball, golf, tennis, girls soccer and track throughout the Upper Peninsula.
As the finals in these sports are being played out, we look to one event in particular that in its essence captures the spirit of high school athletics in this region: The U.P. track and field finals, which take place in Kingsford Saturday.
For many who love athletics, the track finals day is their favorite sports day of the year, bar none. The reason is that through regional qualifying, young women and men from all corners of this beautiful peninsula travel to Kingsford to compete.
That's right: Both genders and three divisions converge for one great day of running, jumping, throwing and relaying to glory.
It's a bit hectic, but it's also thrilling for participants and spectators alike.
U.P. track and field finals day is indeed something special. It's a day of U.P. Power, for sure, as Yoopers gather to cheer on these hard-working student-athletes.
We congratulate not only the athletes who qualified for the U.P. finals, but each and every participant in spring sports in 2013.
Mother Nature was not kind to you the last few months, but we're hoping she grants gloriously beautiful weather as your season - and your school year - draws to a close.
