NEGAUNEE, Mich. - William A. (Bill) Melka, 86, of Negaunee, passed away Sunday morning, May 26 at the Eastwood Nursing Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born January 5, 1927 in Iron Mountain to the late Albert and Celia (Amel) Melka, and was predeceased by wife, Janet (Johnson) in 1986.
Bill was a long time resident of Marquette, before retiring from Our Own Bakeries and moving to Crystal Falls. He enjoyed wood working, feeding and watching the birds, travel, and any chore that involved riding his John Deere tractor. Bill always had a twinkle in his eyes and loved to tease his kids and grandchildren.
He is survived by five children, Christine Libby Long of Rochester, NY, Brian (Susan) of Harrison, ID, Greg of Witch Lake, MI, Patricia Lojek (Stanley Stalla) of Belfast, ME and Kay (Ken) Burgoyne of Minneapolis, MN; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Libby, Madeline (Devin) Owens, Alex Melka, Bailey (Daniel) Oliveira, Garrett, Mariah and Owen Lojek, Sydney and Logan Smoger and Natalie Burgoyne; and one great grandchild, Malia Oliveira: sister, Rose (Ron) Titter; and brothers, Fred and Larry. Bill also leaves behind his dear friend, Doris Barta.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Eastwood Nursing Center who did such a wonderful job of caring for our father.
