John Edward “Hock” Hockstad

MARQUETTE, MI. - John Edward "Hock" Hockstad, 81, of Marquette, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 15, 2013, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans after several years of battling cancer.

He was born August 5, 1931, in Manistique, MI, a son of the late John L. and Mary Louise (Fountain) Hockstad. John was a 1949 graduate of Manistique High School and attended NMU for four years. John played basketball while attending Northern.

John served as a corpsman in the US Navy and was a Korean Conflict veteran. He played semi-pro baseball and basketball for the Navy Sea Hawks Far East and selected to participate as an all-star for the Naval All Star Basketball Team.

On July 24, 1972 he married the former Marjorie Ann Luisier in Marquette.

John was a professional car sales specialist for 35 years, working for several dealerships after last retiring in 2009 from Jon's Auto.

John was a member of the American Legion Post #44, Manistique VFW Post #4420, K of C Council #6447 of Harvey and a past member of the Moose Lodge and Elks.

He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and was well known for his great cookouts. He liked to go dancing with his wife, loved to sing, tell jokes and entertain friends and family. He especially loved to sing "Green Green Grass of Home", which was near & dear to his heart.

John is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marjorie A. Hockstad of Marquette; two daughters, Jolene (Mike) Miller of Marquette and Dorothy (Jeff) Harlos of El Cajon, CA; a son, Ted Hockstad of Gwinn; five grandchildren, Jennifer Estes, Jessica Renfro, Vanessa Harlos, Abigail Hockstad and Sarah Wartgow; three great - grandchildren, Michael Estes, Lydia & Nolan Wartgow; mother-in-law, Loise Luisier of Oconto Falls, WI; sister-in-law, Diane (Mike) Evert of Mukwonago, WI; brother-in-law, Richard (Debbie) Luisier of Wausaw, WI; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Gertrude Lemieux, Raymond Sr., Bernard and Joseph Hockstad, and father-in-law, Leo Luisier.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home.

A memorial service will immediately follow with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber and Deacon Dean Jackson officiating.

A special thanks to Lake Superior Hospice and the D.J. Jacobetti employees for all the love & care for John over the past months.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Lake Superior Hospice and the D.J. Jacobetti Activity Fund.
