Prep golf: Marquette's Rochester leads field at Pictured Rocks

Mustangs’ girls take third, Redmen boys finish fourth at Pictured Rocks

MUNISING - Avery Rochester earned girls medalist honors by shooting 81 at the Munising Invitational high school golf meet held at Pictured Rocks Golf Club in Munising on Friday.

That was four strokes better than Gladstone's Callie Jensen, who led her team to a three-stroke team victory over Escanaba, 390-393.

Just eight girls broke 100, including fourth-place Carla Nottmeier of Munising with 92 and teammate Molly Matson with 99.

Munising was fourth with 404, followed by Marquette with 426, Manistique 466, Westwood 498 and Negaunee 598.

Nine schools participated in the girls meet, seven with enough players to post team scores.

On the boys side, three area boys broke into the top 10 individually, led by Marquette's Brett Specker and Jordan Frazier, each with 82.

Tyler Tweedale of Munising shot 83 and David Renaldi of Negaunee was just outside the top 10 with an 84.

The medalist was Phil LaMarch of Escanaba with 75, one stroke better than Gladstone's Adam Scheeneman.

The Braves' Kyle Pouliot and Carney-Nadeau's Hunter Eichhorn were next with 77s.

Teamwise, the Braves completed a sweep of the day, shooting 319, seven strokes ahead of Escanaba in a 16-school field that included 14 teams able to post a team score.

Norway was third with 335, Marquette fourth with 337, followed by Munising with 345 and Negaunee 354.

Manistique, paced by Zach Powers with 87, was ninth with 359; Westwood, led by Connor Mason with 92, was 11th with 383; and Ishpeming, who had Cody Kugler shoot 89, was 14th with 391.

Gwinn and Newberry didn't have enough golfers to post team scores as the Modeltowners' Alex Morse shot 87 and Indians' Mackenzie Newby and Jacob Gaberdiel each had 89.
