MARQUETTE - Five people have filed to run for the two seats opening this fall on the Marquette City Commission.
David J. Campana, Russell E. Kangas, Mike Plourde, Sarah K. Reynolds and Tony E. Tollefson have filed to run for the seats being vacated by Mayor Johnny DePetro and Commissioner Jason Schneider.
Schneider announced recently that he would not seek a second term, while DePetro, who has been on the commission since 2005, will be leaving the panel due to term limits.
The candidates must be in good standing with the city treasurer and need to be approved by the City Elections Board, which will meet Thursday afternoon.
If all five are confirmed, the city will hold a primary election Aug. 6 to narrow the field to four candidates. Those four will then move on to November's general election.
In addition, a seat on the Marquette Board of Light and Power currently occupied by Jerry Garceau is up for election. Garceau, who is running for re-election, is serving his first three-year term and is being challenged by John Braamse.
