MARQUETTE - The Marquette Senior High School girls soccer team improved to 7-2 overall on the season over the weekend after picking up two wins and a loss in Rhinelander, Wis., against three teams from the Badger State.
The Redettes split two blustery games on Saturday, losing 3-1 to host Rhinelander and closing with a 5-1 win over Wausau West. MSHS won on Friday evening 8-0 over Green Bay West.
MSHS head coach Dan LeBert was especially proud of the win against Wausau West after his team scored all five goals in the first half.
The defense, anchored by freshman Lexi Guidebeck, was left to close out the win against the win in the second, he said.
"Our whole defense deserves kudos," LeBert said. "Wausau West was a really good offensive team and our defense played really well."
Five different Redettes scored against Wausau West in the first half with freshman Sydney Higgins, sophomore Makayla Burse and sophomore Casey Durand finishing with a goal and assist.
Senior Sille Hendricksen and sophomore Carleigh Hillier also had goals in the win.
Durand finished with two goals and two assists against GB West while three other players - Carleigh Hillier, freshman Madison Rieboldt and senior Katie Garrow - all had a goal and assist.
Sophomores Allie Hillier, Shelby Ross and Burse also had goals on Friday.
All four goals in the Saturday morning match between MSHS and the hosts came on either penalty kicks or direct kicks.
Burse was taken down in the penalty box and scored on the ensuing penalty shot for the lone Redettes goal.
Rhinelander scored twice on direct kicks and once on a penalty kick.
Freshman Molly Gaudreau was in goal all three games for MSHS. She made six saves in the loss to Rhinelander with five saves coming on set pieces.
Gaudreau made one save against GB West and 10 against Wausau West.
The Redettes return home to host Iron Mountain at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
